(Dr. Dentith) FOLK LIFE Festival will be held this weekend at the Institute of Texas Cultures in Hemisphere Park. The Texas Folklife Festival was modeled after the Smithsonian’s Folklife Festival, which was held in Washington, D.C. in 1968. On behalf of the Institute of Texan Cultures (which was built as part of the Texan Pavilion for the 1968 World’s Fair), O.T. Baker attended the first Smithsonian Folklife Festival and returned home with big plans—to replicate the event in San Antonio. And the wheels were set in motion. Each year, a variety of educational, inspirational and celebratory events honor one of the nation's most revered civil rights leaders. The signature event, the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March, is scheduled for Monday, January 17, 2011. The march will begin at 10 a.m. at the MLK Academy located in the 3500 block of MLK Drive and end at Pittman-Sullivan Park, 1101 Iowa (click this link for march route and info). Once again, it is expected to draw more than 100,000 adults and children. San Antonio hosts one of the largest marches in the United States.

The fare is $1.10 one way ($2.20 roundtrip) with discounted fare of 55 cents one way ($1.10 roundtrip) available to children ages 5-11, senior citizens 62 and over, Medicare recipients, and students with a valid VIA reduced fare ID card. VIAtrans customers and children five and under ride special event bus service for free. VIAtrans services will operate at $1.75 each way and rides must be reserved in advance. VIA passes are not valid for special event bus service.

Primer Sabado is a one-day event held in downtown at Market Square located at W. Commerce and Santa Rosa Street, next to the Museo Alameda. This event is free and open to the public from 12 noon to 6pm. Don't forget to visit the shops, restaurants and the Museo Alameda while you're here! The shops in Market Square are open seven days a week from 10 am - 6 pm (September -May) and 10 am - 8 pm (June-August).
